Spicy Chicken Diavolo with Braised Cabbage

Whenever I go to Tokyo, I like to try different restaurants. But during my latest trip last week, I had to revisit a favorite. The restaurant is called Trattoria Salsiccia 1 in Hiroo district.

Right before serving this delectable snack, a blow torch comes out and blasts the cheese. It is presented melted and dripping with tastiness.

The owner of the tiny shop selling these took our picture and then told us that nikumaki onigiri are the #1 snack of the Japanese Grand Prix. I believe him.

Red Bean Mochi

One day this week, I heard a knock at the door. It was a man selling mochi, Japanese confections. I chose the azuki bean traditional filling.

What a fun place Japan is that they sell their sweets door to door. But then I guess it’s not so different than Girl Scout cookies…

These gorgeous cookies are adapted from the cookbook Cristina’s Tuscan Table, a recent find at the local library. Instead of regular salt, I used grey sea salt in the recipe, and then sprinkled a little on top. Read the rest of this entry »
